At Best Mattress Brand, every recommendation starts with a mattress on the floor and a tester on top of it. Our lead tester, Sarah Anderson, a Certified Sleep Coach and Mattress Tester, has personally tested 43+ mattresses for our guides, scoring each one on the same fixed set of measures so our picks are comparable, repeatable, and grounded in hands-on testing rather than spec sheets. This page explains exactly how we test, how we score, and who reviews our work.

How We Test Mattresses

We test every mattress the way you actually use one. For each bed, Sarah lies down in the back, side, and stomach positions to note how the mattress supports the spine and relieves pressure for each sleeping style. From there, she works through the same checks on every bed:

  • Sleeping positions: how the surface holds the hips and shoulders in the back, side, and stomach positions.
  • Response time: how quickly the surface recovers when you change positions, which matters most for combination sleepers.
  • Motion transfer: how much movement crosses the bed from one side to the other, which matters most for couples.
  • Edge support: how stable the perimeter feels when you sit or lie near the edge.
  • Cooling and breathability: how cool the cover feels to the touch and how breathable the materials are, compared against other beds tested in the same session.

We test against other beds we have tried rather than against marketing language, so a cooling note means a surface felt cooler to the touch than the beds we compared, not that it stays cool all night. Where a manufacturer makes a material or certification claim, we report the certification and its scope rather than restating the marketing.

How We Score Mattresses

Every mattress we recommend carries a single Overall Score out of 10, supported by six fixed sub-scores. The sub-scores are the same on every guide, so you can compare any two beds directly:

  • Value: price relative to materials, build quality, warranty, and trial.
  • Edge Support: stability of the perimeter when sitting or lying near the edge.
  • Trial Period: length and terms of the at-home sleep trial and return policy.
  • Response Time: how quickly the surface responds when you change positions.
  • Motion Transfer: how little movement crosses the bed between sides.
  • Cooling & Breathability: how cool to the touch and breathable the surface felt in testing.

A category winner does not have to carry the highest Overall Score on a page. Our “best” guides recommend the mattress that performed best for a specific shopper, so the best soft mattress is chosen for pressure relief and plush comfort, the best cooling mattress for how little heat it retained in testing, and so on. We never adjust a score to justify a ranking. Each pick is supported by what we observed in testing and by who the bed fits, and every recommendation names who should consider a different option.

Who Tests and Who Reviews

Testing and authorship. Our commerce guides are written and tested by Sarah Anderson, who has nearly five years of experience as a certified sleep coach and mattress tester and a journalism degree from Arizona State University. She does the hands-on testing and writes the reviews in her own testing voice.

Medical and health review. When a guide covers a health-related topic, it is reviewed by a member of our independent expert review board, matched to the subject:

Our reviewers check health-related content for accuracy. They do not write our product recommendations, and their clinical input stays in the review note rather than in the body of a review. Most of our buying guides are commerce content and are author-tested by Sarah without a medical reviewer.

Research and Continuous Improvement

Before any hands-on testing, we research the product category, customer priorities, and market trends, and we draw on owner reviews and independent sources to round out what testing alone can show. This shapes the research and editorial process behind each guide. We revisit our guides as products change, re-test when a model is updated, and update our scoring approach as the category evolves, so a guide reflects the current version of each bed rather than an older one.

What’s a Certified Sleep Coach?

Our authors complete sleep-coach training through the Spencer Institute and become certified after working through the science of how we sleep. Understanding how sleep works is what lets us judge how a mattress, pillow, or other product helps you sleep better, and it is the foundation behind every score on our guides.
